No Regrets

by Steve Goodier

At the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, the sport of canoe racing
was added to the list of international competitions. The favorite
team in the four-man canoe race was the United States team.
One member of that team was a young man by the name of Bill Havens.

As the time for the Olympics neared, it became clear that Bill's
wife would give birth to their first child about the time that the U.S.
team would be competing in the Paris games. In 1924 there were
no jet airliners from Paris to the United States, only slow ocean
going ships. And so Bill found himself in a dilemma. Should he go
to Paris and risk not being at his wife's side when their baby was
born? Or should he withdraw from the team and remain with his family?

Bill's wife insisted that he go to Paris. After all, competing in the
Olympics was the culmination of a life long dream. But Bill felt
conflicted and, after much soul searching, decided to withdraw
from the competition and remain home, where he could support
his wife when the child arrived. He considered being at her side
his highest priority, even higher than going to Paris to fulfill his dream.

As it turned out, the United States four-man canoe team
won the gold medal in Paris. And Bill's wife was late in giving
birth to their child. She was so late, in fact, that Bill could
have competed in the event and returned home in time to
be with her when she gave birth.

People said, "What a shame." But Bill said he had no regrets.
For the rest of his life, he believed he had made the better decision.

Bill Havens knew what was most important to him. Not
everybody figures that out. And he acted on what he believed
was best. Not everybody has the strength of character to say
no to something he or she truly wants in order to say yes to
something that truly matters. But for Bill, it was the only way
to peace; the only way to no regrets.

There is an interesting sequel to the story of Bill Havens...

The child eventually born to Bill and his wife was a boy, whom
they named Frank. Twenty eight years later, in 1952, Bill
received a cablegram from Frank. It was sent from Helsinki,
Finland, where the 1952 Olympics were being held. The
cablegram read: "Dad, I won. I'm bringing home the gold
medal you lost while waiting for me to be born."

Frank Havens had just won the gold medal for the United
States in the canoe racing event, a medal his father had
dreamed of winning but never did. Like I said, no regrets.

Thomas Kinkade eloquently said, "When we learn to say
a deep, passionate yes to the things that really matter,
then peace begins to settle onto our lives like golden
sunlight sifting to a forest floor."

Creation Q & A

Question:  Is antibiotic resistance proof of evolution?

It is true that certain bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics. On
the surface, this may seem like evidence for evolution. After all, these
bacteria seemed to have "gained" something?a resistance which
they didn't have before.
It's easy to see how a student could be intimidated by teachers
who push evolution by declaring that bacteria have gained a
resistance. Thus, they supposedly evolved.
But, when you study the matter at a molecular level and
understand how this resistance came about, it becomes obvious
that it has nothing to do with molecules-to-man evolution.
Dr. Georgia Purdom explains:
Mutation and natural selection, thought to be the driving forces of
evolution, only lead to a loss of functional systems. Therefore,
antibiotic resistance of bacteria is not an example of evolution
in action but rather variation within a bacterial kind. For evolution
in the Darwinian sense to occur, an organism has to gain
information--information that previously did not exist. Bacterial
resistance has nothing to do with a gain of information: it can be
inherited from information that already existed, there could be a
loss of information, or there could be an exchange of previously
existing information from another bacterium. However, none of
this has anything whatsoever to do with molecules-to-man evolution.

Thought For The Day

"It is what we give up, not what we lay up, that
adds to our lasting store." --Hosea Ballou

Verse for the Day

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on
earth... but store up for yourselves treasures in
heaven...For where your treasure is there your
heart will be also." --Matthew 6:19-21

Kid's Thought For The Day

"Why buy roses when daisies are free."

Parent's Thought For The Day

"The main purpose of holding children's parties
is to remind yourself that there are children more
awful than your own."

Coach's Thought For The Day

"The Lord gave us two ends to use; one to think
with, the other to sit on. Which one we use will
determine how well we do in life. In other words,
heads you win, tails you lose."

Creation/Evolution Thought For The Day

"...Yet Gould and the American Museum people are hard to
contradict when they say there are no transitional fossils... You
say I should at least 'show a photo of the fossil from which each
type of organism was derived.' I will lay it on the line - there is not
one such fossil for which one could make a watertight
argument." -Dr. Colin Patterson, ibid.

Writer's Thought For The Day

"It's an adrenaline surge rushing through your body.
You have this spark of an idea that keeps threatening
to burst into flames and you have to get the words
out on paper to match this emotion or picture in your
head. After this comes the work of cleaning up the
mess that you made." -- Janet West

Deep Thought For The Day

Fighting with lightsabers seems to be such a dangerous sport.
I would think that there would be fewer Jedi Knights named
"Obi-wan" and more named "Lefty."

Video Imagery --Michael's Video Production Business

Dear Michael,

"I just wanted to take a minute to thank you for the beautiful video you made for me!
It was so special to see both of my parents in tears as they watched their children
grow up in pictures before their eyes! I loved the way you made Estania's part set
aside from the rest--that was the part that really got them! The music was beautiful.
My mom kept blubbering, "What song is that?" I don't know how you did such a
beautiful job with the video in such a short time. I really appreciate your doing it so
quickly. You have a wonderful gift, and I thank God that you are using it to create
such sentimental memories. I hope that I can find my niche like that in an area that
I love. Your video gave us one of our most lasting Christmas memories! I hope yours
was filled with moments to be treasured forever!"
